Rignach Hopson – Former Apprentice

Current Job role
Senior Electrical project Engineer

How long have you been working with E+I Engineering
Since 2002, almost 19 years

What was your apprenticeship role/ specialism
ONC & HNC in electrical and electronics engineering

How valuable was the apprenticeship scheme for you?
The apprenticeship scheme enabled me to study academically towards my educational goals while also learning through work, in a manufacturing environment. To me this was the best of both worlds, being able to achieve a great understanding of electrical engineering and manufacturing from the onset of my training. So by the time I had completed my training after 4 years I was in a great position to grow with confidence within the company.

How have you progressed within the company?
After I completed my apprenticeship I was given the opportunity to move from the workshop floor into the engineering office, in a new role as an engineering assistant, I held this role for 1.5 years until I progressed into a junior project engineer, engineering my own projects. I am now a senior project engineer, working on data centre projects around Europe for large blue chip companies.

How did E+I Engineering support your career progression throughout your apprenticeship and beyond?
E+I Engineering facilitate your career goals through education and training, and will recognise your achievements and hard work through progression opportunities within the company.

What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship with E+I Engineering
If you are driven and have a keen interest in engineering and manufacturing then this apprenticeship is an opportunity not to be missed!

Peter Smyth – Former Apprentice

Current Job role
Production Manager

How long have you been working with E+I Engineering
Since Nov 1995 (25yrs)

What was your apprenticeship role/ specialism
JIB Installation Electrician

How valuable was the apprenticeship scheme for you?
I have always wanted to be an electrician after growing up around construction sites from a young age. At secondary school, I participated in a week’s work experience with E+I Engineering, who then sponsored me to join the JIB Electrical apprenticeship scheme at our local college. The knowledge gained through the apprenticeship scheme gave me an excellent baseline to further my skills in other advanced electrical fields.

How have you progressed within the company?
After completing my apprenticeship, I worked at E+I Engineerings manufacturing facilities in Derry & Donegal. I travelled on-site throughout the UK, mainland Europe and even Russia, gathering additional skills as I went along. In January 2007, I applied for a Team Leader position progressing in September 2015 to Production Supervisor. In April 2018 I was promoted to my current role as Production Manager at a new facility at Campsie in Derry.

How did E+I Engineering support your career progression throughout your apprenticeship and beyond?
E+I Engineering has supported me throughout my time at the company. I have been able to avail of many training opportunities in Health and Safety, Line management and other electrical based courses. There has always been an open-door apporach, with support from my peers and superiors which certainly helped broaden my horizons and increase my confidence.

What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship with E+I Engineering
The apprenticeship scheme is an excellent career path opportunity for a person with the right attitude and drive to progress through college and gain practical engineering knowledge on the factory floor.  Earn as you learn!

Ciaran Tierney – Current Apprentice

What year of your apprenticeship are you in?
4th year Apprentice

What is your role/specialism?
Electrical engineer apprentice

What are you studying and where?
HNC, Electrical Engineering at NWRC

Why did you chose an apprenticeship with E+I Engineering?
I completed a full year at university and quickly realised that it wasn’t suited to me. Instead I opted for the apprenticeship route offered by E+I Engineering as I preferred the hands on approach to learning in a manufacturing environment whilst carrying on my studies at the same time.

How valuable has the apprenticeship scheme been for you?
The apprenticeship allowed me to gain knowledge and insight into how electrical switchgear is manufactured and installed. This allowed me to widen my knowledge in electrical and mechanical engineering.

What are your career aspirations?
My aim is to compete the apprenticeship and continue to learn about how electrical switchgear operates. I would to get a better insight to how PLC’s (Programable Logic controls) are programmed and how EMS (Energy Management Systems) work. This is a department within E+I Engineering that interests me.

Applications for E+I Engineering’s Apprenticeship Scheme open July 2021. Stay tuned for more information.
